Empowering Boston's Veterans
As a combat veteran, nonprofit leader, and advocate for veterans and Gold Star Families, I know our next Mayor must have a commitment and plan to support our veterans and their families, empower them to fully participate in our economy, and connect them with vital resources to live full and dynamic lives.
I know that John Barros is the Mayor our community needs, and I’m proud to be supporting him and working to help guide and implement a comprehensive plan for Boston’s veterans.
John is the bold, creative leader we need to connect veterans with the opportunities they deserve and empower them to use their considerable leadership, commitment to the community, and technical skills to make a difference for our neighbors. As Chief of Economic Development, John ensured Veteran-owned businesses had selection priority for City contracts and procurement to support economic opportunity within the City of Boston.
As Mayor, John will fully implement and adopt the BRAVE ACT to enhance employment benefits, offer tax relief, and ensure survivor benefits to Gold Star Families and protections to our city’s Citizen Soldiers. John also plans to elevate the Commissioner of Veteran Services to a Cabinet position, and restructure the Office of Veterans’ Services so that each caseworker is a specialist in a designated area of need. John will also create a position for a licensed clinician for veterans dealing with Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS), Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), Military Sexual Trauma (MST), and Substance Abuse. Our Veterans and their families struggle far too much when applying for disability compensation, educational benefits, and healthcare, and well-trained public servants will ease that process providing peace of mind.
I’ve known John for a long time, and I know him to be a strong leader who has worked his entire professional life to make sure all of Boston residents have access to the opportunity and resources they deserve and will honor the sacrifice and service of all Veterans by supporting us in whatever ways he can. I’m eager to work with John to provide even more resources for veterans, and I hope you’ll join me.
